The roots of the Excelsior roasting date back to the early twentieth century when the brothers Luigi and Umberto Gianfrè started an import-export trade in Trieste that dealt with foodstuffs and in particular onions
Since the nineteenth century, when Trieste was the main port of call for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the city was an important landing place for trade and above all for the importation of coffee; still today it is one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean and this is why Trieste has been called the “coffee capital”.
Thanks to the passion and experience of its master roasters, Excelsior has carefully and carefully selected the coffee varieties for over 60 years, buying the raw and creating the blends according to the Trieste tradition.
Unlike many others, Excelsior coffee is not stored in a warehouse and is toasted at the moment: this is the guarantee of buying a product that is always fresh. This is a productive aspect preserved by the family to respect the traditional methods of preparation and maintain the original identity of the brand.
To discover this ancient art of coffee roasting, Excelsior invites you to visit its headquarters in Via Cumano. It’s easy to find: when you arrive at the Trieste hippodrome you close your eyes and the good fragrance of freshly roasted coffee will guide you to roasting.
In recent years, the company has renewed its image and expanded its customer portfolio not only in Trieste and Friuli Venezia Giulia, but also in Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and other countries.
Furthermore, the company specializes in the production and marketing of coffee capsules, distinguishing itself by the high quality and excellence of its products. In 2014 Excelsior inaugurated branches in Croatia and Slovenia affirming its presence abroad.
